In order to reach Chora Sfakion you can fly directly to Crete, preferably to Chania (CHQ -pronounced "Hania") or Heraklion (HER) airport. For flights from the UK you can use Thomas Cook, www.justtheflight.co.uk (or call 08718 551551), Charter Airlines Europe, www.cheapflights.co.uk, www.lazyquote.co.uk or www.flightline.co.uk. From London Stansted, check the NEW daily flight of Aegean to Chania via Athens. Easyjet also now has a direct flight from London to Crete, daily to Heraklion(HER) and to Chania (CHQ) three times a week, during the tourist season. For flights from other European countries try Easyjet, Charter Airlines Europe, www.aerlingus.com, www.germanwings.com, www.norwegian.se or www.airberlin.com. Be aware that on some occasions booking two single flights can be cheaper than a return flight!
You can also fly to Athens (ATH) (www.airtickets.gr or www.easyjet.com) and either get a transit flight or boat to Crete (Chania – CHQ).
Boat travel from Piraeus (Athens) to Crete
There is an overnight fast boat to Chania from Piraeus, the port of Athens, easily accessed by metro from the airport. There is also now a new line, operated by Blue Star Ferries, departing Piraeus at 14.45 arriving at Chania at 22.00, and returning at 23.00 arriving at Piraeus at 06.15 the next day, from as little as 19 EURO one way. Anek lines has the same offer for 19 EURO on its overnight lines.
Road travel to Chora Sfakion
Travelling by taxi is the most convenient, but also the most pricey, way to reach the village. A taxi from Chania costs 80 EURO (1 hour) and from Heraklion 130 EURO (2.5 hours).
Alternatively, from Chania you can get a bus directly to Chora Sfakion, but confirm departures in advance because during high season (April-October) there are only three a day (at 8.30, 11.00 and 14.00; 6,80 EURO; duration 2 hours).
From Heraklion you first need to get a bus to Rethymnon (approximately every hour; 6,30 EURO; duration 90 miutes) and then a bus to Chora Sfakion changing buses at Vrisses (at 8.00, 10.00, 13.00; 7,10 EURO; duration 2 hours). Vrisses does not have a bus station per se, rather, a coffee shop in which you can buy a ticket and in front of which the buses stop.
To get to the bus station in Chania from the airport, you will most probably need to get a taxi (15-20 EURO), as the bus only runs 3 times a day (7.15, 10.30 and 19.30 from the airport and 6.00, 9.00 and 18.30 to the airport). Chania bus statino also has a luggage storage operating between 6.30 and 20.00, which can be useful if you have a long wait and the beautiful old city just a few minutes walk away.
To reach the Heraklion bus station from the airport there is a bus service (bus No. 6) at regular intervals, but ask the driver to tell you where to get off for the bus station because it is not obvious.
A car can also be hired and picked up at either Chania or Heraklion airport upon arrival, or during your stay in the village. The windy mountain road down to the village has just undergone extensive work, with three tunnels replacing the sharp curves, making it much safer and easy to drive on!
A pick up from Chania can be arranged by us in some cases, when guests arrive at similar times or late at night. If you are interested in this option, please contact us for an arrangement.
Please contact us if you have any difficulty arranging your transfer.
